# Memex: The best memory for your AI > Free AI memory for ChatGPT, Claude and every AI you use. You and your AI can now access the same memory, every note, every fact, every word. The memex.tools landing page in Markdown, for AI assistants, with who memex suits and where to start. People read it at https://memex.tools/. ## Turn your conversations into AI memory you can actually use. Every new chat starts from zero, and each AI keeps its own memory, out of reach of the others. **Memex is one memory for all of them. Save what matters, they read everything back next time.** Free, private, secured ## One memory for every AI you use Use one, or all of them at once. They read and write the same notes, so each one picks up where another left off. - **Chat assistants** (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity): On your phone, in the browser or in the app. Connect it once in its settings, then just say “save this to memex” or “check memex first”. - **Coding assistants** (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor): Your project’s decisions and conventions are there at the start of every session. Stop re-explaining the codebase. - **Agents that work on their own** (Hermes, OpenClaw): Agents running on their own schedule read the same memory as your chats. What they write waits for your OK, unless you trust them to write directly. Write and plan with Claude, code with Codex, let Hermes follow up: they all work from the same *memory notes*. Every memory record is a note in memex — one you can see, edit or delete. *Your AI memory is no longer a black box.* ## Who memex suits People whose work product comes out of AI conversations and needs to survive them. - Uses one or more assistants daily, for real work. - Produces outcomes (plans, decisions, research, reviews, drafts), not just answers. - Is bothered that those outcomes are stranded in chat histories they cannot search, trust or move. - Will spend a minute reviewing what the AI wrote. Consultants, researchers, analysts, PMs, lawyers, clinicians, teachers, solo founders, serious hobbyists with a real project. ### What memex is not - **There is no AI inside memex.** memex has no chat box and generates no text of its own. The thinking is done by you and by the assistants you already use. The one exception is optional: if you add a provider key of your own, memex can write a short description and file tags for a note you add on the website without them. See [How AI features work](https://docs.memex.tools/how-ai-features-work). - **Nothing works on your notes by itself.** No scheduler, no background pass, no resident model. If nobody asks, nothing happens. memex never tidies, curates or summarises anything unasked. The one thing it does on a clock is housekeeping: a deleted note's text is purged after its thirty restorable days. What memex does keep is the record: who wrote what, and when. - **No chat box.** You ask Claude, ChatGPT or whatever you use; it reads your memex and answers from your notes. - **One person, one knowledge base.** There are no shared teams. Your assistants are the only other things that can reach your notes, and only on the terms you set for each. - **It is not a file store.** Notes are Markdown and text. A PDF or a spreadsheet becomes a note *about* the document, written by your assistant when you ask; the original stays where it was. - **No transcripts.** memex holds what somebody chose to save, so "what did I say in March" works only for what was kept. - **No folders, no nested tags, no collections.** Tags, links and workspaces. - **Review is work.** Held writes accumulate if the inbox is never opened. It is fine to let them sit; they are not applied meanwhile. - **Connecting takes a settings pane and a few minutes**, not one click. memex sits alongside the memory features your assistants already have. Those remember how you like an answer. memex holds the work you and your assistants produced and chose to keep, in your own words, readable by every assistant you connect. ## You’ve probably said one of these to your AI. Pick one to see what goes wrong, and how memex fixes it. - [Your AI forgets everything when you start a new chat.](https://memex.tools/new-chat-forgets): “Every time I start a new chat, you forget everything from before.” - [Switch AI without starting over.](https://memex.tools/switch-ai-without-starting-over): “I’m switching between ChatGPT and Claude, and I don’t want to lose what we’ve built up.” - [See what your AI remembers, and fix it when it’s wrong.](https://memex.tools/see-what-ai-remembers): “I can’t see what you remember about me, or fix it when it’s wrong.” - [Write your instructions once, for every AI you use.](https://memex.tools/same-instructions-every-ai): “I keep typing the same instructions, and you still don’t do it the same way twice.” - [Stop re-explaining your project to your coding assistant.](https://memex.tools/coding-assistant-memory): “I explain my project to my coding assistant at the start of every session.” - [Give your agents the same memory as your chats.](https://memex.tools/agent-memory): “I want my agents to know what I decided in my chats.” ## Everything memex can do for you ### Memory and search - [Shared AI memory](https://docs.memex.tools/what-is-memex.md): Memory notes can be accessed by all connected AI at once. - [Markdown notes](https://docs.memex.tools/how-notes-work.md): Plain notes with links, backlinks and properties. - [Semantic search](https://docs.memex.tools/find-notes.md): Find notes by meaning, not just by exact words. - [Knowledge map](https://docs.memex.tools/map.md): See how your notes connect, and which may be out of date. ### Integrations - [Connect any AI](https://docs.memex.tools/connect.md): Commercial, open-source or custom: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Codex, Cursor and your own agents. - [Connection control](https://docs.memex.tools/how-connections-work.md): Approve, name and revoke each connected AI. - [Selective loading](https://docs.memex.tools/mcp-tools.md): Your AI loads only the skills and note sections it needs, so it spends fewer tokens. ### Personalization and skills - [Skills](https://docs.memex.tools/skills.md): Teach a task once, and every connected AI does it the same way. - [Profile](https://docs.memex.tools/profile.md): One note about you that every AI reads first. - [Writing rules](https://docs.memex.tools/writing-rules.md): Set how your AI writes your notes. - [Bring your own key](https://docs.memex.tools/ai-features.md): Optional: your OpenAI, Anthropic or Google key writes descriptions and tags. - [Layouts and workspaces](https://docs.memex.tools/frames.md): Side-by-side views, saved searches, light and dark themes, on desktop or phone. ### Review and history - [Review Inbox](https://docs.memex.tools/review-inbox.md): Approve, fix or reject what your AI writes before it’s saved. - [Curation](https://docs.memex.tools/maintenance-pass.md): Your AI finds and fixes duplicates, stale notes and broken links. - [Version history](https://docs.memex.tools/note-page.md): Restore any of the last twenty versions of a note. - [Activity log](https://docs.memex.tools/activity-log.md): Every change by you or your AI, on record. ### Import and export - [Import](https://docs.memex.tools/import.md): Markdown, text files or a whole Obsidian vault. - [Export](https://docs.memex.tools/export.md): Everything as Markdown, in one click. - [Restore and backups](https://docs.memex.tools/delete-and-restore.md): Deleted notes come back within thirty days, and backups run nightly. ### Security and privacy - [Private by design](https://docs.memex.tools/what-memex-does-not-do.md): memex runs no AI of its own and never trains on your notes. - [Secure access](https://docs.memex.tools/accounts.md): Passwordless sign-in, encrypted tokens and keys, and sessions you can end. - [Delete for good](https://docs.memex.tools/how-deletion-works.md): Erase a note, its history or your whole account. ### Open source and self-hosting - [Open source](https://docs.memex.tools/self-hosted.md): The same memex under AGPL-3.0, on your own computer. - [Fully local](https://docs.memex.tools/self-hosted-connect.md): Search, backups and assistants can all stay on your machine. ## What makes memex different | | Regular chat | Memory products\* | memex | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Remembers across new chats | Partly | Yes | Yes | | Shared by all your AIs | No | Yes | Yes | | See everything it remembers | Partly | Partly | Yes | | Fix a wrong memory | Partly | Partly | Yes | | You decide what’s saved | No | No | Yes | | Undo any change | No | Partly | Yes | | Reusable instructions across AIs | Partly | Partly | Yes | | Export everything | Partly | Partly | Yes | | Never used for training | Partly | Partly | Yes | \* What is said here about AI providers and professional AI memory products comes from a review of more than sixty products as of September 2026. It describes patterns across the group, not a single product. They differ in scope, and the review did not test each claimed feature. [Compare](https://memex.tools/compare) ## Questions ### Doesn’t ChatGPT already remember things about me? They all do, each inside its own system, and that memory stays behind when you switch. With all the complexity of modern AI memory solutions, in most cases what your AI needs is a simple notebook you both can read and write to. Memex is that notebook: one set of notes every assistant you connect can read, written in your words, with you deciding what goes in. Connect the next assistant and it reads the same notes. Nothing to export, nothing to explain again. ### Can I see what my AI remembers about me? Yes. Every memory is a note you can open, read and edit, on any device with a browser. Nothing your AI saves in memex is hidden from you. ### What happens when I switch from ChatGPT to Claude? Connect Claude to the same memex, and it reads everything ChatGPT saved there. Nothing to export or import, and you can keep using both. ### Is it really free? Yes. memex has no AI of its own to pay for. Limits are generous and may change. ### Will this make more work for me? Only as much as you put in. Your assistant does the writing, and it is fine to let held notes sit until you have a minute. A knowledge base does take the shape of the person who keeps it, though. Your part is the verdict: what is true, and what stays. Spend a minute on that per note and everything you build on it is better for it. ### Who can see the information I save? Notes are private to your account and stored on Amazon’s infrastructure in the US. Connected assistants can read them. Memex also sends note text to OpenAI for meaning-search indexing and summaries, so saving here can involve a provider you may not use for chat. Read the privacy policy before saving sensitive material, and keep passwords and API keys elsewhere. ### What if I want to leave? Take everything. One click downloads every note as Markdown, links included, to open in any program or import into self-hosted memex. No fee, no request, no format of ours to decode. ### Can I run memex on my own computer? Yes. Memex comes two ways, with the same notes and the same review inbox. Neither is the better one; they suit different needs. #### Online, at memex.tools Sign in with Google, Apple, Microsoft or GitHub and you’re ready.
