memex.tools is a personal project built and run by one developer, not a company. These terms are between you and that developer. Questions: hello@memex.tools.

What you are getting

Memex is a hosted knowledge base. You store notes, they are searchable, and the AI assistants you choose to connect can read from and write to them under rules you set.

It is currently in Early Access and free to use. It is fully functional, not a trial version, but it is early, run by one person, and offered as is.

Your account

Access is by invitation. One account belongs to one person, and you must be at least 16 to have one. Keep your login details to yourself, and tell us at hello@memex.tools if you think somebody else has them.

You are responsible for what happens through your account, including what the assistants and agents you have connected do with the access you gave them.

Your content is yours

You keep every right in everything you put into memex. Nothing here transfers ownership.

You grant us only the narrow permission needed to run the service for you: to store your notes, to process them so they can be searched, to send them to the third parties named in the Privacy Policy for that purpose, and to show them back to you and to the assistants you have connected. That permission exists only to operate memex and ends when you delete the content or your account.

We do not use your content to train AI models, and we do not license it to anyone.

The same courtesy in reverse: memex’s own software, name and design belong to the developer, and using the service does not give you rights in them. If you send ideas or suggestions, we may use them to improve memex without owing you anything — that is what suggestions are for.

What you must not do

Do not use memex to store or distribute anything illegal. Do not use it to infringe other people’s rights, to store material you have no right to hold, or to attack, overload, or probe the service or the people using it. Do not resell access.

We can suspend or close an account that does these things. For anything short of serious or repeated abuse, we will contact you first.

If you believe content stored in memex infringes your rights, write to hello@memex.tools and we will look at it promptly.

What we do not promise

Memex is provided as is, with no warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will be available without interruption, that it will be free of faults, or that it will suit your particular purpose.

Being blunt about the shape of the risk, because it is a fair thing to know: this is a free service run by one person on modest infrastructure. Things can break, and a fix can take as long as it takes. Export your notes regularly. Export exists in one click precisely so that a bad day for memex is never a bad day for your knowledge.

Don’t store passwords, keys, or anything you would hate to see leaked. Memex is meant for notes, decisions and drafts.

Limits on liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost profits, lost data, or any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of memex. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you have paid us in the previous twelve months, which during Early Access is nothing.

If your use of memex, or content you store in it, causes a legal claim against us by somebody else, you agree to cover the costs that claim creates. This is the mirror of the clause above: you are responsible for your side, we are responsible for ours.

Some jurisdictions do not allow some of these exclusions, in which case they apply to you only as far as the law permits. If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands.

Deleting things

Deleting a note keeps it recoverable for thirty days, after which its content is destroyed and only a marker remains, as described in the Privacy Policy.

Deleting your account is immediate and irreversible. There is no recovery window. Export first — once it is gone we cannot get it back for you.

Changes to memex, and to these terms

Memex is under active development. Features will change. If we change something in a way that materially affects how you use it, we will tell you.

If the service is going to stop, you will get at least thirty days’ notice by email, and export will keep working until the end.

Material changes to these terms will be emailed to you before they take effect. Carrying on using memex after that means you accept them.

Ending it

You can stop at any time by deleting your account. Export first.

We can end your access if you break these terms, or if memex shuts down. If it is our decision rather than a response to something you did, you get the notice described above.

Free now, not necessarily forever

Early Access is free. Memex may not always be. Nobody will be charged without being told in advance and choosing to continue.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States, and any dispute belongs to the courts there. If something goes wrong, write to hello@memex.tools first — most problems between reasonable people are solvable by email.
